Financial Assistance Available to Attend FALAN

The Latin American Regional Committee (LARC) is providing financial assistance to attend the First Congress of the Federation of Neuroscience Societies in Latin America, the Caribbean and the Iberian Peninsula (FALAN) to be held in Cancun, Mexico on 4-9 November 2012. Applications will open on-line in April 2012.

LARC: VI Latin-American Summer School on Epilepsy (LASSE)

São Paulo, Brazil. Starting in 2007, LASSE has served as the educational arm of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) for Latin America. As in the previous five editions, LASSE gives the opportunity to young health professionals from throughout Latin America to live a unique experience both in professional and educational terms.

LARC: Ricard Miledi NS Training Program: Synapses, circuits and behaviour

Interregional School of Neuroscience: From nutrition to zoonosis

School of Neurobiology, Molecular and Cell Biology

Puerto Rico. "Probing normal and pathological neural cell functions".  A fundamental goal of the course organizers was to have the class represent the interdisciplinary nature and diversity of researchers in the neuronal biochemistry and cell biology fields. 33 students participated. Several students received invitations from faculty members of the School to visit research laboratories in the USA and Brazil next summer for additional training. These students will later return to Puerto Rico and apply these techniques in their own research projects at their respective institutions.

Third INF Summer School in Neuroendocrinology

Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. The main goal of the event was to contribute to the development of neuroendocrinology in Latin America and in developing countries, to promote links between scientists and students and to strengthen scientific cooperation.

II International Workshop on Neuroimmunology. A Great Success!

Varadero Beach, Cuba. The meeting organized around the central theme: “Basic & Clinical Neuroimmunology :Bridges and Challenges” was focused on aspects of neuroimmunoregulation, biomarkers, gene interaction, neuroimmunomodulation, stem cell and neuroplasticity into others aspects . Main lectures and symposia on all these important issues were organized. Participants came from various countries, including: Peru, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, South Africa, Canada, Germany and Italy.

Brazilian Ph.D. student named 2011 IBRO-FRSQ-INMHA Albert J Aguayo Fellow
José Peixoto Santos, a Ph.D. student from the Universidade de São Paulo in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, has been named the 2011 IBRO-FRSQ-INMHA Albert J Aguayo Fellow. His field of study centers on the pathology and MRI alterations in temporal lobe epilepsy.

IBRO Return Home Fellow Alejandra Pacchioni reports on her progress at the National University of Rosario, Argentina, where she investigates the behavioral neuropharmacology on drugs of abuse and was appointed a member of her school's Bioethics Committee.

2010 IBRO Return Home funding recipient reports progress from Argentina
Argentine neuroscientist Mario Perello remains convinced that returning to his home country after two post-doc experiences in the U.S. was the right decision for him and his family, despite the challenges.

IBRO Return Home funding recipient Alberto Ramos shares challenges, successes

In 2006, Ramos started his lab at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, focusing on neuro-glial crosstalk in sleep apnea and brain ischemia, with help from IBRO's Return Home funding programme.
